Shopify vs Wix: which is better for your small business?

Shahnaz AhmedBy Shahnaz AhmedNovember 1, 20266 min read

Shopify and Wix are two of the most popular ways to build a business website, and they both promise to get you online fast. But they’re built for different jobs. Choosing the wrong one can mean paying for features you don’t need, or outgrowing your platform just as your business takes off.

Here’s a plain-English comparison to help you decide.

The short answer

  • Choose Shopify if selling products online is the heart of your business, or you plan to grow your online store.
  • Choose Wix if you mainly offer services (like a salon, consultant, cleaner or restaurant) and want a beautiful, flexible website, perhaps with a small shop or booking system.

Ease of use

Wix lets you drag anything anywhere on the page, which makes it feel creative and easy for beginners. The downside is that it’s also easy to end up with a cluttered design that doesn’t look right on phones.

Shopify is more structured. You pick a theme and customize its sections. It’s less “freeform,” but that structure keeps your store looking professional and working well on mobile.

Selling online

This is where Shopify shines. It was built from the ground up for ecommerce, with strong tools for products and variants, inventory, shipping, taxes, discounts, abandoned-cart recovery and a fast, trusted checkout. It also connects easily to marketplaces and social selling channels.

Wix can sell products too, and it’s perfectly fine for a small shop. But if you expect to grow to many products or lots of orders, Shopify is usually the better long-term home.

Design and flexibility

Both platforms offer attractive templates. Wix gives you more design freedom page by page, which suits portfolios and service businesses. Shopify themes are focused on showing products well and guiding shoppers to checkout.

SEO

Both Shopify and Wix give you the SEO basics: editable page titles and descriptions, clean URLs, mobile-friendly designs and sitemaps. In practice, how your site is set up and the content you publish matter far more than which platform you pick. Learn more on our SEO services page.

Costs

Both platforms charge a monthly subscription, with cheaper rates if you pay yearly. If you sell online, you’ll also pay payment processing fees on each sale, and paid apps can add to your monthly bill. Because plans and fees change often, always check the current pricing on each platform’s website before deciding.

The bottom line

If you’re serious about selling products online, Shopify is usually the better investment. If your business is built on services and you want design freedom, Wix (or a custom-built website) is a great fit. Whichever you choose, set it up properly from day one so it looks professional, loads fast and can be found on Google.

Questions

Shopify vs Wix FAQ

Is Shopify or Wix better for selling products?

Shopify is generally the stronger choice if selling products online is the main goal of your business, especially as your catalog and order volume grow. Wix can work well for small stores that sell a limited number of products alongside a service website.

Is Wix easier to use than Shopify?

Wix’s drag-and-drop editor is very beginner-friendly for designing pages. Shopify is also easy to learn, but it is organized around products, orders and checkout rather than free-form page design.

Can I move from Wix to Shopify later?

Yes. Products, pages and content can be moved from Wix to Shopify. It takes some planning to keep your Google rankings, such as setting up redirects from old page addresses.

Which is better for SEO, Shopify or Wix?

Both platforms give you the SEO basics you need, like editable page titles, descriptions and mobile-friendly designs. Your content, site speed and how well the site is set up matter more than the platform itself.
